Case Study: An Interview with Dewey and Beulah

On Divesting your Property with Southwest Home Solutions

We had the opportunity to interview Dewey and Beulah, who worked with Southwest Home Solutions seven years ago to sell their house. Dewey and Beulah bought their home on Alamosa Place in 1968 on a real estate contract, four years after they were married. It was their home for 36 years. During that time they added a one bedroom apartment in the back of the house for Beulah’s mother, who lived with them for 20 years.

After Beulah’s mother passed, Beulah wanted to have a fresh start. They bought a beautiful single level home near Rodeo Plaza, where they live happily to this day. After they moved, Dewey and Beulah began renting their old house and eventually became disenchanted with being landlords. According to Dewey, “It takes a special kind of person to be a landlord…and I am not that person!” After describing a series of problems, from late rent and neglect to maintenance issues, Dewey concluded: “we had some very bad experiences with renters.

It was at this point that they received a marketing letter from us, expressing interest in buying their house. They called back to discuss their options and arranged a meeting to see the house. After spending some time with Bill Peterson, Southwest Home Solution’s owner, they were eager to sell him their property. According to Beulah: “I just wanted to get us out of there!” In this case, our plan was to buy the home, remodel it, and put it on the market to sell. Through the process of the sale, Dewey recalled, “Bill was very patient—not pushy—and we got to become real good friends.”

When the sale went through, the Southwest Home Solutions team got to work on the remodel. With all new kitchen cabinets and appliances—including the first time installation of a dishwasher!—the home was modernized and fresh. When Bill invited the former owners to come back to see the work, Beulah was impressed, saying “he does wonders!

Dewey and Beulah were pleased to sell a property that had once been a comfortable home, but had turned into a headache. To others in a similar situation, Dewey advises:

Get rid of it as quick as you can! Renters couldn’t care less about your property. I would recommend getting with someone like Bill who knows the business. Bill has a way of marketing real estate others don’t have and it’s hard to find someone you can trust. We tried regular real estate agents, but never had luck.
